Statement by the Deputy Director (SLBF)

In each of the workshops, the Deputy Director (Mr. Franklyn Williams) welcomed participants and informed them that the objective of the workshop is to communicate to the private sector the recent Doing Business (DB) reforms achieved in the past six months since November 2010.

He stated that from 2005 to 2011, Sierra Leone moved upwards by some 20 places in the World Bank DB rankings from 160 to 143 out of a total of 183 countries. He emphasized that since the launch of the World Bank DB ranking report in November 2010, the government of Sierra Leone undertook aggressive reforms geared towards moving the country upwards in its ranking from triple digit to double digit ranking in the next 2012 report. He briefly gave an overview of the six reforms implemented and stated that the benefit to the private sector is to make business better by easing and reducing the cost and time of doing business for the business community. He stated that these six reforms namely; establishment of a fast track commercial court, automated trading across borders with ASYCUDA++, improved one-stop shop for business creation, establishment of a credit reference bureau, digitalization of land survey maps and streamlining procedures for construction permits are in their implementation stages. He urged participants to fully play an active role in the workshop and also disseminate knowledge gained to members of various organisations they are representing.
